Every country has their own gift etiquette.

Here are some in the Philippines:

  • Filipinos often look for gifts that are thoughtful and practical, instead of expensive ones.
  • When choosing the right gift, consider the receiver's interests and cultural beliefs to avoid giving offensive gifts.
  • Filipinos pay attention to the gift wrapping and overall presentation of the gift.
  • Unless urged by the receiver, Filipinos generally do not open the gifts they receive on the spot. So don't be offended when they don't unwrap your present in front of you.
  • When invited to another house, Filipinos usually bring small gifts like fruits or desserts.
  • Monetary gifts from elders to the younger ones are common in some occasions like graduations, birthdays, and Christmas. Grandparents especially enjoy giving their grandkids money.
  • Gift giving is usually done to simply show appreciation for someone and nothing is expected in return. Should they gift something in return, never compare the value of what was given to what was gifted in return.
